Harry Potter Overseas Earnings – Weekend Box Office Update

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone achieves remarkable international success, with $239.7M overseas, poised to surpass $300M, showcasing its global box office dominance.

Warner Bros. reported that the Harry Potter film earned about $60.1 million overseas over the weekend from roughly 8,000 screens across 37 territories, bringing its foreign total to approximately $239.7 million — roughly equal to its U.S. run so far.

At the current pace the international tally is on track to climb past $300 million by next weekend.

The weekend haul was slightly under the movie’s record-setting $60.9 million frame from Nov. 30–Dec. 2, which remains the highest-grossing overseas weekend ever.

Known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S. and parts of Asia, and as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone elsewhere, the picture opened in France with an estimated $10.1 million in its first five days on 851 screens — the widest French release for any studio film, surpassing Star Wars: Episode I, and the fourth-biggest bow in that market’s history.

Italy kicked off with an estimated three-day debut of $4 million on 465 prints, figures WB says are 77% larger than Phantom Menace and 61% ahead of Titanic in that territory.

The film has shown strong holds in several markets: second-week drops were minimal in Japan and Spain, about 10% by Warner’s count.

Japan contributed an estimated $11.3 million in its second weekend (behind its opening), lifting the cumulative there to $34.6 million; Spain added roughly $4 million in its sophomore frame, bringing its total to about $11.3 million.

Australia saw a steeper decline, down 44% to $2.7 million after a record preview, for a running total of $9.1 million.

Other notable cumulative totals include the U.K. at $63.2 million through four weeks and Germany at $38.9 million after three weeks.

In Argentina the film slipped to second place in its second weekend when Monsters, Inc. opened with an estimated $660,000 from 103 screens — the biggest non-holiday animated debut there.

Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire also opened in Japan with about $2.5 million in two days, ranking as the third-highest early bow for a U.S. animated feature in that market behind Dinosaur and Toy Story 2.

In Germany Atlantis drew an estimated $2.4 million in four days on 836 screens (including previews), a start comparable to The Emperor’s New Groove and roughly 20% stronger than Hercules.

American Pie 2 generated about $2.2 million in four days from 216 engagements in Australia, some 44% ahead of the first Pie’s comparable run when previews are excluded.

The raunchy sequel also opened in Spain midweek to exploit a Thursday holiday, finishing its first four days with roughly $2.3 million from 255 screens — reported as 103% bigger than Jurassic Park: The Lost World and 21% above The Mummy Returns. Its global cume has topped $112 million with more territory openings to come in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

Liverpool-set action thriller The 51st State (starring Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Carlyle) had a weak world premiere in the U.K., earning an estimated $880,000 in two days from 309 sites.
