The Rules of the Road when Using E-Bike

It’s a common question for new riders: can you ride electric bikes on the road? The answer is a clear yes, but only if your bike meets a few key requirements. In the UK, a legal e-bike is known as an "electrically assisted pedal cycle" (EAPC), and if your bike fits this classification, it can be ridden on public roads just like a traditional bicycle.

The Rules of the Road

For an e-bike to be an EAPC, it must:

  • Have a 250W Motor: The motor's maximum continuous rated power output cannot exceed 250 watts.

  • Have a Speed Cut-Off: The motor must stop assisting you when you reach 25 km/h (15.5 mph). You can pedal faster than this, but the electric assistance must cease.

  • Require Pedaling: The bike must have working pedals, and the motor can only assist when you are pedaling (a "walk mode" throttle up to 6 km/h is an exception).

If your e-bike meets these criteria, you are legally allowed to ride it on roads and cycle paths. You do not need a license, insurance, or an MOT. However, you must follow all the same traffic laws as other road users. Always wear a helmet and use lights at night for your own safety.
